Title: The Role of Physics and Math in Industrial Research
Abstract:
What is a career in industrial research really like? What types of problems do industrial researchers tackle? How do university-acquired math and physics skills translate to industry? How are AI and large language models (LLMs) transforming the research landscape?
Aaron Maschinot (UK B.S. in math & physics ’99, MIT Ph.D. in physics ’05) has worked as an industrial researcher for 22 years, including 10 years in AI/ML. He has worked in many areas including Google Maps satellite imaging, generative AI, LLM optimization, autonomous driving, signal detection & tracking and medical imaging.
In this talk, Maschinot will walk through concrete research projects from his career, illustrating the foundational math and physics behind each one. He will also discuss how modern AI is reshaping the researcher's daily workflow and how to navigate mid-career pivots in industry.
