A Timeline for Completion of the Ph.D.

Semester Activities Comments
1 Take PHY 770, core and topical courses as appropriate, may take a research or independent study course.  
2 Take PHY 770, core and topical courses as appropriate, may take a research or independent study course. Make first attempt at physics GRE.  
3 Take core and topical courses as appropriate, may take a research or independent study course. Must have passed physics GRE at 50th percentile by the end of this semester.
4 Take core and topical courses as appropriate, may take a research or independent study course. May establish Advisory Committee.  
5 Take courses as appropriate, including research courses. May establish Advisory Committee and take Qualifying Exam.  
6 Take courses as appropriate, including research courses. May take Qualifying Exam. Must complete core courses by the end of this semester. Must have established Advisory Committee by end of this semester.
7   Must have passed Qualifying Exam by end of this semester and submitted written research plan.
 

Dissertation research 

 
  Dissertation research.  Must present oral progress report each year prior to that of Doctoral Final Examination.  
  Take Doctoral Final Examination Submit dissertation to Graduate School. All requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed within 5 years after the semester in which the Qualifying Examination is taken.
