Where we live in the universe

Most people know where they live on Earth. But where does the Earth live in space? What is our cosmic address? Sure, the Earth is a planet circling the Sun. But where is the Sun? How far away are the other stars? If the Sun were the size of a ping pong ball, how far away would the next star be? (Hint - very far away!) How are stars in the universe gathered into larger and larger groups? Which of these groups includes us? What are the names of these groups and how big are they? You already know your address on Earth. Come to this talk and learn about your address in the universe.

Tonight’s Kentucky SkyTalk is part of an ongoing series. These are presented by the UK Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the MacAdam Student Observatory. Held every 2nd Thursday of the month, they are always free and open to the public.
