How do we go from “here” to “there”? A
(possible) view of tomorrow’s HENP
computing
As the High Energy and Nuclear Physics (HENP) communities are
progressing toward a hardening of their data production environment,
the ever-changing world of computing is bombarding us with new
trends and new paradigms with potentials to dramatically change the
landscape of tomorrow’s computing. From the explosion of new
processor architectures and devices often mixing CPU and powerful
graphics cards, the onset of the multi-core era to the appearance of
the so-called Cloud computing (challenging the existence of Grid
computing), the “buzz” are numerous. But what are the technologies
with a real changing power able to affect today’s HENP HTC & HPC
worlds? What are the challenges for our HENP communities to truly
harvest the power of those new technologies? Are we ready for this
rapid evolution and where do we go from here to “there”? We will
attempt to present a broad overview of the issues and investigate
those questions through a few illustrative examples.
