Welcome to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Kentucky.

We are a community of people from all over the world united by our curiosity about the most fundamental aspects of the natural world. We ask such questions as: Why is there more matter than antimatter? How did galaxies form? What is special about a superconductor made only of carbon? How complex is a black hole? How can we use quantum entanglement?

The research that we do affects all aspects of our program, informing the courses that make up our undergraduate major and guiding graduate students and postdocs towards the creation of new knowledge. Our students graduate knowing how think independently, how to break a problem down to its constituent parts, how to solve it and most importantly, how to learn new things. They are sought after in diverse fields such as the tech industry, law, medicine and business.
