Dr. Andreas Kronfeld (Fermilab)
The strong interactions—of quarks and gluons emerging into hadrons—affect the world we see in many ways. For example, the mass of everyday objects stems from these interactions, which we now understand from first principles, namely quantum chromodynamics (QCD). I discuss how this arises and contrast the QCD mechanism with the Higgs mechanism, which generates the masses of quarks, charged leptons, and weak gauge bosons. I emphasize that the origin of mass via QCD is now well understood, thanks to computational work with lattice gauge theory. Refreshments will be served in CP 179 at 3:15 PM
