 It has been suspected for a long time that a proper quantization of gravity will demote space-time into an approximate notion  - a coarse grained description of something more fundamental. In the past three decades, a concrete candidate for such an underlying structure has emerged from a confluence of ideas in String Theory and Quantum Chromodynamics. I will discuss the conceptual foundations of this set of ideas which have been useful in understanding quantum aspects of black holes, and are beginning to throw light on the meaning of quantum gravity.
